about

Recorded at a time when I was very new to engineering (recording, mixing, and mastering) - so please listen at your own risk because the recording itself was beyond abysmal.

This was also during a time when I was awful at singing. I barely had a vocal range back then, and so I certainly could not hit those high notes like my friend Derek (RIP) could. Not only couldn't I hit high notes, but I was so badly off-pitch and out of tune when I sang that I was unlistenable when I got behind a microphone.

For decades, I was actively seeking out people who could sing my songs how I heard them in my own head. While Derek was my best friend and had a lot of his own problems, he was an extraordinary singer. He made quite the impression on me when I first heard him sing along to some Metallica. But our friendship wasn't without much clash.

After that first time we hung out, I actually tracked him down and asked to hang out with him more. As it turned out, we both loved the same bands, and so we connected very much when it came to music. He was, and always will be amongst the top favorite singers of mine - famous or not famous. In my eyes, he was on par with Layne.

Derek killed himself back in 2009. Him and I weren't too close at that time, and so the last time he ever recorded his voice on any of my songs was back in 2006 - while recording the song "Bottom".

In 2015 - six years after we lost Derek and his amazing voice, I apparently found myself starting to advance towards his level of singing. I truly believe that at this point in time (mid 2018), I am right there with him in my singing ability.

But no one can seem to match his tone and timbre. He had an amazing voice that was strong and unique.

If I'm the Cantrell of Lifelong Lesson, then Derek was the Layne Staley. I can continue making music without him, but it will never hold a candle to what it could have been.
